Morocco United Kingdom: Brexit or not, Rabat maintains its achievements.

As expected, Morocco and the United Kingdom made an agreement of global association saturday morning. In the context of bilateral relations, the convention restores all the advantages they rendered to each other in the context of the Morocco-European Union association agreement.

The agreement will come into force once the Brexit is consumed. It’s signed by Nasser Bourita the foreign minister and Andrew Murrison the secretary of State for the United Kingdom foreign office and responsible for the MENA (Middle east and north Africa) region.

In addition to this agreement, both parties signed three legal instruments. These three were a political declaration and two conventions, in the form of exchange of letters. One concerns a dispute settlement mechanism and the other is access to the United Kingdom market for all Moroccan products, including those in the southern provinces.

Although the tree legal instruments are signed with a view that the United Kingdom is leaving the European Union, the fact remains that they do not prejudge the internal national debate on Brexit. Their entry into force is expected after the official release of the United Kingdom from the European union, said Nasser Bourita.

On the other hand, these instruments make it possible to limit the impact pf a Brexit, in particular on the economic and commercial relations between the two countries, and to turn this challenge into a real opportunity for the continuous development of our bilateral relations, he said.

The transposition of the Association Agreement at bilateral level is a means of preserving all political, legal, economic, sectoral and territorial gains achieved in the framework of the strategic relations between Morocco and the European Union.

With this agreement, the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union will not create any break in the bilateral relations between Rabat and London. The document ensures a smooth transition, maintains fluidity and security, and the exchange of letters on the dispute settlement mechanism can be designed as a preventive measure.

Likewise, the exchange of letters allows products from all regions of Morocco to access, under the same conditions and without any discrimination, the British market, reciprocity also applies.

The continuity and visibility necessary for economic operators as well as the security necessary for the development of cross investments are ensured. Likewise, Nasser Bourita added that the already effective complementarity between the economies of the two countries is consolidated.

As for the political declaration, it confirms the mutual commitment to consolidate and strengthen bilateral relations with a view to establishing an ambitious and sustainable strategic partnership.

« For the head of the Moroccan diplomacy, » it is the outcome of a sustained process with UK partners to respond to the effects of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union.

« Stressing that, with the signing of this document, » both parties have successfully transformed the challenge of Brexit

in a real opportunity for the continuous development of our bilateral relations.
